Special folder - Wikipedia. On Microsoft Windows, a special folder is a folder which is presented to the user through an interface as an abstract concept instead of an absolute folder path. For example, on German versions of Windows XP it is . However, since Windows Vista, all Versions of Windows use the same English named folders and only display different names in the Windows Explorer. In Windows 1. 0 the user can switch to another display language and the names of the special folders will change. The idea has evolved over time, with new special folders being added in every version of Windows since their introduction in Windows 9. Microsoft's . In the former case, they are analogous to environment variables — in fact, many of the environment variables that are set in a user's session are defined by where the special folders are set to point to. Virtual folders, however, do not actually exist on the file system; they are instead presented through Windows Explorer as a tree of folders that the user can navigate. This is known as the Shell namespace. On Windows XP systems, the root of this namespace is the Desktop virtual folder, which contains the My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places (Network Neighborhood in Windows 9. At some point in dealing with Windows XP and printers, you’ve probably have come across a network printer that you cannot remove no matter what you do or who you login as. This recipe will explain how to remove ANY network printer from Windows XP via the Registry. This does require the user being an administrator account. WARNING: Editing the Registry improperly can cause adverse performance of your operating system and can even cause your OS to be corrupted or non- bootable. This will deal with network printers only. Login as the account that is having problems removing a printer. If the account is not an admin account, I would recommend making it one to make things easier. Open the Registry Editor. You can do this by going to your Start Menu > Run and then type “regedit” in the run box and hit Enter. Step 3. In the Registry Editor, Expand the My Computer area. Then go to this location: HKEY. Click on the printer name and hit the delete button. Now the printer will instantly disappear from the printers and faxes list. There is also one more spot to remove the printer from in the Registry. Go to HKEY. If you do not have any other network printers on that server, you can delete the folder of the print server. Otherwise, find the printer under the print server folder (ie my- print) and delete the printer. To finish the registry edits, close the Registry Editor and then reboot. Hopefully that network printer will no longer show. Again, like most things that are done in the registry editor, BE CAREFUL on what you delete or do not. Bad registry edits can cause your XP machine not to boot or BSOD. Restore To Factory Settings – Guide for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 1. Stay. Andy Walker provides tips and techniques for getting non- cooperative programs to behave in Windows Vista. This chapter is from the book . All these programs are running around in a system, generally quite peacefully and cooperatively. But sometimes a rogue application comes along, like a basset hound with attitude, and upsets the whole balance of the system, driving it into a growling, furry fury. UpdateStar is compatible with Windows platforms. UpdateStar has been tested to meet all of the technical requirements to be compatible with Windows 10, 8.1, Windows 8. What Really Happened with Vista. I generally have posted about things that I have been directly involved with — either code I wrote or projects I managed. The Windows API, informally WinAPI, is Microsoft's core set of application programming interfaces (APIs) available in the Microsoft Windows operating systems. One of the largest software projects ever undertaken, Vista is indisputably a milestone—despite Microsoft's having. Remove the barking offender, and you can return the situation back to normal, though sometimes that can be difficult. And if he's gobbled through last night's nacho bowl, mind the grass. Like a nacho- gobbling hound, software can leave some nasty disruptive code that fouls the system when it is uninstalled. So let's look at a few situations where software on a system can be a bad dog: The operating system—Microsoft is notorious for shipping incomplete and buggy operating systems. Vista is no exception. Although Microsoft claims it's the most tested operating system ever, the reality is there is a lot of new programming code inside it. So until Microsoft ships the first service pack for Vista (expect it February/March of 2. Vista is going to be temperamental at times, especially for those that push the operating system hard. Third- party applications from both big and small software vendors can have all kinds of bugs built into them. Companies are actively reworking their programs to make them Vista compatible, primarily to be compatible with the new security system. If you are trying to install a program on Vista that was previously installed on a Windows XP computer (or older), you could encounter some problems, as follows: The installer might crap out. The program or Vista might throw up all kinds of error messages during installation (see Figure 9.
The Windows Secrets Newsletter brings you essential tricks of running Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Windows Update, and more —. Figure 9. 1 Some programs won't install nicely on Vista, such as this Adobe Flash plug- in. It might not work as advertised or as expected. Drivers—If your problem appears to be hardware- related—that is, if a piece of hardware attached to or part of the system doesn't work the way it is supposed to—chances are, the problem is software- related. Hardware rarely works intermittently and then dies softly. BetaBritePrismUSB4Vista.zip - This zip file contains the updated drivers for using the Betabrite Prism on Windows Vista and Windows 7. BBPMS Setup.zip - This zip file. It usually makes like Bruce Willis and dies hard. So when your system starts to behave erratically, it's a good idea to go looking for a software cause first before jumping to conclusions. The device might need a firmware or a driver update, or sometimes it just needs more resources from the system, such as memory or hard drive space. Why Windows Me deserves more respect. I have a confession to make, I used Windows Millennium Edition and I liked it. That doesn’t stop me making fun of it however. At a time where there was still a separation between consumer and enterprise operating systems, Windows Me was at the top of its class. What a lot of people forget or don’t even recognize to begin with is that Windows Me is actually a rather innovative and forward- looking operating system. Instead, almost everyone focuses on its reliability problems which can be largely attributed to the flaky and inherently unstable Win. With the help of Wikipedia, here’s a short list of the most notable features that were introduced or improved in Windows Me. See how many of these have provided some benefit to you in the past. For me, many of these are fundamental to my Windows experience. Windows Movie Maker(new) – allows basic editing of home videos. Might not work all the time, but a huge leap from the format and install approach to troubleshooting. System File Protection(improved) – monitors and restores undesired changes to important Windows system files. Might be a hassle for advanced users, but gives some protection over malicious damage of system files. New TCP/IP Stack(improved) – adds ability to sense whether adapters are connected to a network, improved performance and reliability and home networking features. Universal Plug and Play (UPn. P)(new) – adds the ability for the computer to request ports autonomously to the router. Before this, device vendors had to write a custom solution on their own leading to many compatibility problems. Automatic Updates(new) – allows for download and installations of Windows Updates directly in Windows. Before, users had to manually check the website. Inbuilt ZIP support(improved) – allows the creation and extraction of ZIP folders natively in Windows. Image preview(new) – inbuilt picture viewer for many of the popular photo and image formats. Bundled games(improved) – Pinball and Spider Solitaire. Nuff said. USB Mass Storage generic driver(new) – the first consumer Windows OS to support any USB mass storage device without third- party drivers. Before, you had to install a custom driver from a floppy to use any USB drive. Could you imagine the security problems if Windows XP didn’t ship with Automatic Updates? Or if WIA was never introduced – how difficult it was to install a scanner in Windows 9. What about having to download a third- party utility to view a JPG? Or not having to plug in a USB drive and just have it work. In spite of this and more, people continue to draw comparisons between Windows Vista and Windows Me as if it were as hip as writing Microsoft with a dollar sign in the late 9. I don’t think this is fair at all. If anything, it means Vista has a bunch of new and improved features that we won’t realize the full potential of till a couple more Windows releases down the road. But that doesn’t mean it’s destined to a be a . Between the two, Windows Me was released on September 1. Windows lifespan of only 4. Taking into account consumer purchasing life- cycles and other factors, what’s left is only a couple of days of fame. Any product preceded and superseded that quickly would have suffered the same fate. |
